Baltimore Orioles Select Tiger Ace Gausman 4th Overall in 2012 MLB Draft
The LSU Tigers baseball team is rolling through the NCAA Tournament thus far, yet life for Tiger’s pitching ace Kevin Gausman got a whole lot sweeter Monday night. Gausman was selected 4th overall, and was the first pitcher taken, in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
The 6’4 185 pound sophomore from Colorado has led the Tigers with an 11-1 record, 128 strikeouts, and an earned run average of 2.72 so far in his 2012 campaign. Gausman dominated in his most recent outing against Oregon State tossing eight innings and only allowing one run.
The current Tigers and soon to be Orioles hurler pleasantly bounced back from a shaky freshman season in which he went 5-6 with a 3.51 ERA in 14 starts.
Gausman was orginally drafted in the 6th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school in 2010, but declined to attend school at LSU. Because he turned 21 in January, he was draft eligible again in 2012 as a sophomore. He joins the company of Jared Mitchell, Anthony Ranaudo, and Mikie Mahtook as Tigers selected in the first round in recent drafts.
Official scouting reports detail Gausman as having a lively fastball consistent at 94 MPH that can easily be improved with strength training. He also features a decent changeup to keep batters off balance. His breaking pitches, however, have only been noted as average and lacking command. Time in the Orioles farm system upon the end of his tenure with LSU should provide improvement on his entire repertoire.
Gausman will be heading to an organization that goes through starting pitchers more often than they change underwear. However, the Orioles have used the draft in recent years to stockpile young pitching prospects, including top prospect Dylan Bundy who was also selected 4th overall in the 2011 draft.
If the Orioles play their cards correctly, this up-and-coming team in the American League could potentially have a dominant 1-2 punch of Bundy and Gausman for years to come.

Gators Shutout Auburn in Game 1 as Tucker Sets UF Hits Record, SEC Title Chase Heats Up
After Tuesday night’s debacle at Samford, the only way for the Gators to save face was to bounce back and put together a complete game. That is exactly what they did Thursday night.
In the opening game of the last regular season series for 2012, No. 5 Florida (39-15/17-11 SEC) topped Auburn (29-25/12-16 SEC), 6-0.
The Tigers haven’t exactly been lighting the world on fire this season with a sub .500 SEC record, however they are a solid squad that until last night, had yet to be shutout.
The SEC’s top offense managed just three hits against junior ace Hudson Randall, as he threw a complete game and pushed his record to 7-1 on the season.
Randall has been heating up for the Gators, a good sign heading into the postseason. He is a perfect 4-0 over hist last four starts with a 1.88 ERA. The most impressive part about the 4-0 record, these wins came against No. 3 Kentucky, No. 15 Arkansas, No. 25 Mississippi State, and the SEC’s top offense Auburn Tigers.
Senior big-man Preston Tucker, the Florida Gator hitting machine, led the team at the plate going 3-for-4, and claimed the school’s all-time hits record in the process.
While the Gators were taking care of business on the plains, and further securing themselves as a national seed come tournament time, Mississippi State continued their hot streak. The Bulldogs knocked off first place No. 3 Kentucky (41-13/18-10 SEC), bringing the Gators within one game of overall first place in the SEC.
The other series of interest to Gator Nation this weekend is No. 9 LSU (40-13/17-10 SEC) at No. 2 South Carolina (38-13/17-9 SEC). The Tigers and Gamecocks were rained out Thursday night, and will play a double-header Friday afternoon.
Florida and Auburn take the diamond Friday night for Game 2 at 7:00 PM ET. Florida’s Brian Johnson (5-4, 4.29 ERA) gets the nod. Johnson will face off against Auburn’s Danile Koger (3-4, 2.76 ERA).

Infamous Alabama “Teabagger” Charged With Sexual Assualt
The infamous Alabama fan who decided to sexually assault a passed-out LSU Tiger fan following the 2012 BCS championship game has been charged with sexual battery and obscenity.
For a fan that has witnessed countless obscene gestures during football games across the country, this is a message that should resonate with fans. Following a day of drinking and a big win, fans often forget that real world policies still apply to the remainder of the night.
Bryan H. Downing, 32, was indicted on Thursday by an Orleans Parish “on one count each for sexual battery of a male victim and obscenity” according to ESPN.
In the video that went viral (Warning: Video contains graphic material.) following January 9th, you can see a passed out LSU fan being assaulted by a handful of Alabama fans. Downing takes it to an unnecessary level when he removes his genitals from his pants, and places them on the LSU fan’s face.
In all fairness, the LSU fan had apparently drank way to much during the day, and wasn’t fit to be in public. But, as a person, you still can’t assault the inebriated individual.
The court set Downing’s bond at $50,000. For Downing, this is just the start to a long road back to normalcy. He was fired from his job following the incident, and remains unemployed due to his actions.
For college football fans everywhere, let’s keep America’s greatest sport as classy as possible, even during rivalries.

SEC Sports Five Teams In College Football Live’s Pre-Season Top 25
It’s never too early to start talking about next season, especially in the SEC. ESPN’s “College Football Live” released their way-to early look at next seasons college football Top 25, and to no surprise the SEC sports six teams in the rankings, five of which are in the Top 10.
Complain all you want Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12, and every other conference. Right now it’s the SEC’s world and everyone else is just living in it. After six straight BCS championships there’s not much to argue about.
LSU and Alabama look to be on yet another collision course for “Game of the Century – Part Tres.” With the latest chaos out of Fayetteville, I expect LSU and Bama to handle business in the SEC West. The Hogs should remain a formidable team, but at the end of the day are probably not worthy of their Top 10 ranking.
While the SEC West has been running college football the past few years, the SEC East has taken a bit of a nose dive. That should change this year with the re-emergence of a solid Florida team, and Georgia and South Carolina vying for national title contention.
ESPN’s Chris Low on the Gators:
Finally, I’m higher on Florida than most people. Will Muschamp feels better about this team’s toughness, its ability to play the brand of physical football that he wants to play, and I also think the defense has a chance to be outstanding.
Spurrier is a consistent QB away from his first SEC Championship since gracing the sidelines of The Swamp, and Mark Richt has pulled a 180, resurrecting a Bulldog program that was STRUGGLING.
Georgia looks to be the class of the East this year, with a stacked roster returning, however given the past history of Bulldog teams ranked highly in the preseason, I wouldn’t be surprised if they fall out of the Top 10.
Here’s how the SEC looks in College Football Live’s preseason Top 25:
- No. 2: LSU
- No. 3: Alabama
- No. 6: Georgia
- No. 8: South Carolina
- No. 9: Arkansas
- No. 25: Florida
With the dead of the summer months approaching, rankings such as these will at least give us fans something to talk about, and argue over. Debate away.
LSU Tigers in the First Round: Another Day, Another Million Dollars
Morris Claiborne and Michael Brockers are now LSU alumni and instant millionaires. Interestingly enough, both guys were affected by an on the clock trade between the Rams and Cowboys that saw each respective franchise swap first round picks, along with the Cowboys sending over their 2nd rounder as well. The Boys’ were elated to be able to snag Claiborne, who was near the top of their draft board. The Rams took a gamble in moving down but were rewarded when Brockers fell into their hands at 16. Here’s the skinny on our old players and their new homes.
Mo Claiborne, 6th overall to Dallas Cowboys
This looks like a great fit for both sides. Family and friends of the Shreveport native, already admitting to being Cowboy fans, won’t have to travel too far to see their man play. And play he should, as a corner spot is most likely his to lose once the pads get thrown on. Though he is not the “super elite” prospect that Patrick Peterson was a year ago, Claiborne is certainly NFL ready, and it’s no doubt that the Jones family down in Big D envisioned a blossoming shut-down corner when they traded up to get him in the 6 spot. Mo must clearly be excited to join a team that’s playoff ready, and hey – he’s already played over there in Jerry World a couple of times.
Michael Brockers, 14th overall to St. Louis Rams
Although St. Louis as a franchise seems like a dire situation, there are some positives here for Brockers in his new found home. The most significant of these is Rams head coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher is a perennial winner, is respected throughout the league, and typically demands and receives high effort from his players. Remember when Albert Haynesworth was the most dominant d-lineman in the league? Fisher was his coach. As we repeatedly heard throughout the months leading up to the draft, Brockers is extremely raw but has an incredibly high ceiling. Once he gets served up some proper NFL coaching and technique, it is easy to imagine the big guy settling in nicely next to Chris Long and wreaking some havoc in the NFC West.
Good luck boys!
